Alaska day 3 additional: engineering for the snow

Landing on the glacier was so incredibly cool - and then I noticed how they do it.

Apparently according to our pilot, fixed skis for the planes were developed simultaneously in the US, Sweden and Russia.  But more recently, these hydraulic skis are being used.  Fixed skis are great when there is snow to land on - but the trios to the glacier only had snow on one landing -- and normal runways on the other.
