Part II - July 31 (wednesday). Day 6

Started the day being a tourist - traveled to Deadwood City north of Rapid City.  Actually had to go through Sturgis - where there is going to be a HUGE motorcycle rally this weekend.  We've seen so many motorcycles throughout the area.

Interestingly, Jack McCall was actually acquitted in Deadwood, and escaped to Wyoming.  It was in Cheyenne Wyoming where he bragged just a bit too much - was arrested, and then hung.

Then left Rapid City.  Flying due north for about  1 hour, just so I can say i've seen North Dakota.
Look at the great geometry involved in those fields:

We are not sure what the crops are here, but I love the designs.

Was interesting watching the terrain change from flatlands between hills to patches of farms between rocky outcroppings and bigger, less green hills (higher).  You really did get a feeling that it was getting about into the wilds - much fewer towns less houses, farms separated by great distances.

Saw an interesting configuration of road and white boxes just before  we left North Dakota.  there is a LOT of oil drilling happening in the southwest corner of North Dakota.  I definitely need to look not that more.

As we entered Montana, you did see a difference the terrains.Greener and much less farmland.
 It's the Powder River.

Went to Miles city for a pit stop.  Stopping at the Frank Wiley airport. A very, very small airfield.    And in the middle of hay fields.  So much so that there is hay being baled right at the end of the runway, as ll as between the ramp (taxi way) and the runway.

But it is a field for the Montana fire department.  They have two planes and a helicopter for fire fighting.    Very cool.
Montana got greener and greener.

Finally arrived in Great Falls.  Important part of the Lewis and Clark expedition.  We'll be exploring that tomorrow.
Very cool landing at Great Falls - there is the Air National Guard there, with F15 jets.

Nice FBO with Holman Aviation.  tucked our little baby in for the night, and went to dinner at Dante's Xreative Cuisine .  I had Scallops St. Jacque

Rick had a southwestern spiced halibut.   Good dinner.  Lots more cheese than I would normally expect with the scallops - but it was yummy.

Thursday:  Exploring Lewis and Clark's adventures ion the Missouri in Montana.
